And I don’t want to hijack this thread right off the bat. I’m just wondering, how come the gang has stopped “mining the depths?” For the past year or so, five out of every six movies sacked has been a hit movie in its time, if not a blockbuster. Not saying I don’t like those episodes — I enjoy listening to Scott, Brian, Randy and Brian riff on and even get deep into these movies and their attendant nostalgia — but it’s such a treat when the gang digs up some obscure movie (Zardoz, Troll 2, Retrograde, Damnation Alley, Bloodrayne, etc) and goes to town on it. It’s not been a total shift, but still a pronounced one. Maybe it’s because a lot more listeners feel invited to the party when the gang is discussing a more popular movie.
But I’m one of the early listeners (since Krull) who loves watching these bad, obscure movies just for the pleasure of guessing which parts about them the gang will riff on the most. I’m never disappointed and it’s one reason I’ve stuck with the show all this time. Just a thought. This was my first viewing of this film and the only other Rocky I saw was the latest one (Rocky Balboa). It was a weird experience. Lundgren was hilarious. Every time Apollo Creed was on screen I expected him to say one of his lines from Arrested Development.
Carl Weathers will always be the “Carl Weathers” of AD to me. I re-watched Cliffhanger for about the millionth time recently and Stallone is way more intelligible in that one than here. You guys mentioned the Rocky character being 80% his own voice. I’d rather go with 60%. When Ibbott mentioned a certain George sitting there with him, I immediately imagined George Costanza. How fun it’d be to have him as a guest on the show?
Brian, Brian, Scott, Randy, I wish you and yours happy holidays. Thank you for making my Monday morning commutes fun! Great episode, gents! To Dunaway’s point, I bought the Rocky boxed set last year and have been working through the series with my four kids, ages 9-15. They’ve enjoyed all the films, but they went BUCK. Over “Rocky IV.” There was wailing and kid-swearing at the death of Apollo, and wild whoops and fist-pumps during the Russian training sequence. So far, it’s easily their favorite.
I found this odd, considering how American/Russian relations have changed since this thing came out, and also because the flick is such a cartoon compared to earlier installments. But there you have it. Anyway, thanks again! Really enjoyed this one. Oh, one other thing! Dead Space 1 Pc Dlc Download Forza.
A couple times you guys got to wondering about the point of Paulie’s character, and I honestly believe that’s a display of loyalty on Stallone’s part. In the first film, Paulie was NOT comic relief; he was a dark, violent, and frightening character. His function was to be the thing from which Adrian was running; Rocky’s mirror image, a man who let poverty and hopelessness defeat him. “Rocky II” humanized Paulie a bit, and it’s the most rounded portrayal of the character. Then the first scene in “Rocky III” features a scene where Rocky and Paulie have it out, and from that point forward, there was no more story for the character. He became the franchise’s Gimli, and was just given funny one-liners. “Rocky II” humanized Paulie a bit, and it’s the most rounded portrayal of the character.
